Artery occlusive disease is more common then it was considered to be. If the vessels in the legs are narrowed, it often indicates that there is narrowing of coronary arteries as well. However many people are not aware of the fact that their vessels are diseased. In many cases arteries though affected do not cause pain, which is known as "a show-window" of disease. That is why the disease remains unrecognised for a long time. An early diagnosis would however help to avoid such complications as occlusions of vessels, heart attack or stroke.
In our practice blood pressure is measured on ankles and on the arms as part of a simple and fast Doppler-Ultrasound examination. With the help of the Doppler ultrasound blood flow becomes visible. In addition to that an echo of the ultrasound creates a tone, which helps the doctor to exactly assess the speed of the blood flow.

The ABI Quotient (Ankle-Arm-Index=Ankle Brachial Index) gives clear indications: If the calculated ABI Quotient is strongly decreased, then there is a higher possibility that vessels in the legs are affected by an artery occlusive disease. Further medical examinations are initiated in this case.
